J Hale always has a couple new El Reys listed on their eBay page:

J Hale Music items - Get great deals on guitar, archtop items on eBay Stores!

but they go for $1,5000 to 2,000. This used one is tempting. But like Jeff Hale writes, the El Rey 7 is a great way to get into 7-string guitars. That's even more tempting!

Don't bid now!! Wait until the end. If you bid now, and are serious about getting the item, then you are GOING to bid at the end as well. And if you bid now, you are just guaranteeing that you will pay more at the end. Pay attention when the auction is 10 minutes away from ending, then get in on it. There is no advantage to bidding early!

I just sold a guitar on ebay, a '98 Les Paul Special, which ended up going for more than it is worth, imho, all because of early bidding. I was happy about it tho!

The best is to use a sniper, so I'm told.

I think I should learn to play my six string first.

I actually already have an El Rey, which is my primary guitar. I was lucky, and picked it up on ebay for considerably less than it was worth by using the seller's Make an Offer option. Of course, that doesn't mean I can't think about buying another one.

I've never used one, but it's a program to fire bids at the last few seconds. Sometimes, if you look at the bidding history of a closed auction, you may see a flurry of bids in the last few seconds, including bidders who were able to make a bid, have it bested, and then bid again and snap up the item. That's the sniper at work!

I think technically, snipers violate ebay's use policy, but there is no way for them to track it...

Go to eSnipe - Bid on eBay Automatically - eSnipe 3.0 I've used it a few times. It's a pretty sweet deal. There is a small fee (at most it comes out to a penny on the dollar, I think). What you do is enter your maximum bid, but it holds it until 5 or 6 seconds before the auction closes, making it a lot more difficult to be outbid.

I've been to J Hales store and played many of the Eastman guitars that Jeff customizes... they are fantastic. I would imagine this guitar listed in the first post is equally as nice.

Yes, but I have yet to miss out on something I really want. This is the danger of ebay for buyers. You can get caught in the frenzy of bidding and go over board. I have seen MANY TIMES items selling for more used, than they cost new due to this dynamic. I think to be a successful ebayer, you need to have realistic expectations, know the market well, and then set your bids accordingly.

I am never disappointed that way, and do not get into something that I over reached for. However, as a seller, you hope to stir up such a frenzy, and I have benefited a number of times in the past on such bidding wars. Such is the nature of ebay. Part of it for guys is the thrill of pursuit, if you will. Goes back to the hunter nature lodged in our DNA I think.

Please, someone else bid. Then I can say I shouldn't bid out of courtesy to a fellow forum member.

That seems right. I bought mine used for $850 and sold it for the same.

With the upgraded pickups, coil tapping and counterbalancing, I expected it to go for a bit more than that.
