Default That Warm Tone

This is the first time I've dipped into the j guitar forum. I'm looking to get a warmer tone from an Epiphone J Pass with the original humbuckers. Having twiddled with the controls on the amp and the guitar in various combinations it still sounds kinda twangy and the bass can't be jacked up on the amp as it feedbacks big time.
Can someone recommend a change of pickups. The tone I really want is closer to Jim Halls - ie warm with a slight hint of distortion. His solo on "My Little Suede Shoes" on Art Farmer's Interaction album is pretty much it.
As I'm South African I'd also like to recommend an album by Prince Kupi called Loxion - great tone. Any other good SA jazz guitarists you know of?

Do you have flats on it? As far as feedback goes, are you facing the amp, or sitting close to it? I have played a variety of JP's and didn't notice any twanginess. What amp are you playing thru?

As far as pups go, Gibson Classic 57s are the way to go.

As far as feedback goes, as few time-tested ways to reduce it (sfter trying EQ and moving away from the amp:

* taping over the f-holes
* stuffing the guitar -- socks seem to be popular
* Doug's plugs

Default tone getting warmer

Thanks for info - I've now got D'Addario Medium flats on, been sitting in my case for the last couple of months. Ampwise I've got the first Polytone Mini Brute1 that came out, if I play closer than about 8 feet away the feedback can only be stopped by turning the bass on the amp way down or playing with continually having to dampen the bass strings with the picking hand , have already taped up the f holes. This brings me onto the following '' Do you know - what is a flat eq meant to be on the amp"
