Default Mikey Bakers Complete Course in Jazz V. 1

I have this book and the 26 chords that you need to learn in the front don't show you if the unfingered notes should be played or muted. Can anyone help?

They're not to be played. Makes transposing them a lot easier

Default try this site

you might want to try the following site.

Mickey Baker

uses tabledit and .tef files. It covers all the lessons in v1 & v2

There is also a pretty extensive thread about it here: http://www.jazzguitar.be/forum/getti...zz-guitar.html

I purchased MB Complete Course in Jazz Guitar Book 1 many years ago. Inspired by the comments on this site I decided to dig it out. The storage room is complete kaos, so far I found lots of other bits and pieces I have forgotten about but no MB book.

I might have to bite the bullet and buy it again. The question I have is it worth buying the latter book (The one titled Jazz Guitar). I am interested in the web site which uses Tabledit to work with exercises, I am assuming they are from the Vol 1 Book?

My memories using the book were of frustration at the finger stretch need for the chords, I was younger then and didn't appreciate chord substitutions to get things moving along.

I think my copy is long gone. I don't recall that many of the chords are big stretches (dig out Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry for that), but Mickey loves using this for the money shot:

C13(b5 b9) [= Gb7#9] 24x355
FMaj7 13x255

Remember, if it's too big a stretch in the low frets, it can still be reachable higher up the neck.

The only chord I could not manage was #7 - Gmaj7

35x477

I modified it to this:

35x777

So don't get stuck on that one.

Good evening, theot71...
Yes, it's the one titled 'Complete Course in Jazz Guitar, Volume I'. That's what's covered by the site as well (and very well done, imho...). The Vol II is useful also, I find, although different. Neither are a waste of the low outlay. Don't feel bad about it, I've worn out or lost (and found again..!) this method several times over in the last 40+ years, and always have them on hand.

Finger stretches? Once you've been doing them for 40+ years, no D13b5b9 (the infamous chord 6...) will be a problem to you (or the chord 7 GMaj7 derived by lowering the 3 bass notes half a step..!). Do what it says in the book, as it says in the book, and it works out just fine, it just takes the time it takes.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info Douglas (I couldn't bring myself to call you dad).
I had a quick look at the comments on Amazon, it seems like Vol 1 is the book to have. Someone referred to the 3rd book as a repeat of Vol 1 and Vol 2?
I plan to clean out some junk over Xmas break, if I don't find my Vol 1 book, I'll invest in a second copy of it.
Ted Green gets a lot of mention on this site, I don't have any of his books, but do have Andrew Green's books.
Time to get cracking on some jazz studies.
