| | Jazz tuition in Merseyside England This is my very first post. I've been a guitarist for many years playing electric blues (BB King etc). But I've been trying to get in to jazz for the past few months, I've got a fair handle on scales/modes up to and including Melodic minor modes (altered scale, lydian b7 etc) but I'm finding it really tough to get the full picture and make it all make sense. Does anyone know of a really good teacher in the UK Merseyside area who specialises in jazz guitar?
I need someone who can make it fun without all the usual 'Start from basics approach'
Cheers

| | I don't know of anyone personally, but I found this site it may help you find a teacher in your area. One thing to consider is if you can't find a jazz guitarist then try a jazz pianist or jazz saxophonist. It seems like you have a good hold on the instrument so maybe all you need is the "non-instrument" stuff to put it all together. Home

| | Ay alright there our kid! Paul, I'm an expatriate Scouser currently living in Essex; welcome to the board, mate!!
Mike Walker drops in on this board from time to time - despite being a Manc, he's OK ( ) and might know of someone.
Joking aside, he's a great player and according to his website, he teaches at LIPA. Maybe it's worth PM'ing him? Mike Walker Guitarist - Jazz, fusion and funk player, teacher and improviser based in Manchester, UK |

| | Hi Paul, I was on the scene in Merseyside for most of my life! Two of my friends spring to mind! Keith Mullen from Lipa and Gary Potter (Probably one of the best around). Also Anthony Ormesher is a good teacher! I will PM you their contact numbers a little later! Or else contact LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts)
Regards

| | Meantime Paul visit Matt's site www.mattwarnockguitar.com
There is some real good stuff there! Start with the comping lesson! This will open many doors! To me comping is like walking before you run!
Matt's technique of breaking everything down in to small parts has worked wonders for me! Try those 3 note comping chords as a base for playing licks around. I was surprised at the results I got! And more important how easy his approach is to brain retain!

Blimey mate, you're just up the road (A127) from me!! I'm in Hornchurch rather than Huyton nowadays.
BUT
if you fancy showing your face at the Southend Jazz Co-op some Saturday morning, you'll see me there. Same bloke as in the Avatar picture above this message, (OK, maybe a little less hairline, and a little more waistline!!) but with a D'Angelico nowadays rather than a Strat. Southend Jazz Co-op
Plus you meet a good bunch of blokes and get to play. Couldn't be better. Give richard a call (details as per website) and turn up. |

| | Hi Paul, how did it go? Anthony's a great player and a really nice lad! (He won young jazz musician of the year you know!). Also his dad Tony is a great player! Study with Anthony for a while then see if you can get a master class with Gary Potter (Another great player and nice guy!)
Good luck

| | Hi Eddie, had a lesson with Anthony on Friday night in Waterloo. He's a great musician/teacher and a top bloke, I mentioned your name and he spoke very fondly of you. During the lesson we went through a Jazz blues touching on loads of substitute options, alt scales/chords, triads, tri subs etc. Still working my way through loads of info (all great stuff, never knew there where so many options available). Blew my head off to start with, but Anthony wrote it all down and made it all make sense. He's an awesome bebop player. (he plays a blonde Ibanez Gibson 175/L4 ces copy that used to belong to his dad; Tony, so you might remember it).
Anyhow once I've digested it i'll book another session.
(BTW Spoke to loads of guys in town and Gary Potter seems really hard to track down, of course, everyone knows of him but no joy re: contact number etc).
Thanks again for the recommendation Eddie.
Cheers

| | 12 Year Old live at The Cavern Hi, I thought some of you might appreciate this clip of a 12 year old Scouse kid playing live at The Cavern - he is lead singer/guitar. As guitarists you will all know what it takes to stand up in front of a packed nightclub (although it was a Saturday afternoon but The Cavern is always packed!) Have a look and see what you think YouTube - Johnny Be Goode @ The Cavern Liverpool.avi
Thanks! |

| | Another scouser here...
My vote goes to Mike Walker. I study with him and seriously rate his teaching, playing and composing. I also recommend you go on his beginner's course for the summer jazz workshops he does in Andaluz. Absolute bargain, and an awesome experience. You'd have a great time and ramp up your playing a lot at the same time.
I also know and have studied with Tony Orm Jr, who is a great guy and great player. I had a couple of lessons with him before going to Mike, and he helped me get a good overview of some jazz concepts.
And if you ever fancy a jam, buzz me and I'll sort something out (there's usually something going on). |

Bodge | He reads these boards, Bodge, but I'll beep him anyways - you studied with him/played together? Cool.
Mike's a seriously awesome tutor. Andaluz Jazz was a great week. Heh heh, I'm gonna woodshed all year in the hope of being good enough to do the second week next year, though I reckon I could benefit from a second run on week1 if need be. Can't recommend that course highly enough. Same goes for his teaching in general - very perceptive and on point.
I'm enjoying revisiting my fave tunes after lessons with him as well - my ears grow each time and I hear the music more deeply as a result.
Right, I need sleep. Laters, hon.
