Newbie! Getting into Jazz.

Hey guys!

I'm posting here because I've decided to get into Jazz.

It's something I've wanted to do do a while yet haven't really had the correct learning tools to do so or a private teacher due to lack of money.

I've been playing Blues for a while and plan to do so even more, But I'm looking to incorporate more melody into my playing, more theory and to generally just become a better musician.

So I come here asking how one goes about learning Jazz, I could try listening to records but my ear isn't too great and it's something i'm trying to work on.

the only things I know about jazz are ii-V7-I progressions, a standard called 'Autumn Leaves' and a tiny aspect of soloing (I just use apperggios over chords (Badly))

So I was wondering as to where I Should start?
I've been playing for 3 years and consider myself an intermediate player, So you can just assume i'm a complete beginner as I want to revise everything I know to make sure I can make some reasonable progress with Jazz.

I know this was a massive wall of text and I'm a new member, but I plan on sticking around to get as much out of this place as I can!

thank you in advance for any replies.

This is something that's asked several times a month here, so poke around the forums and use the Search function - you will find lots of information.

IMNSHO (having traveled this very road myself in the past 3 years), your biggest challenge will be in assimilating the "language" of jazz. It's not like other music. You just gotta log hours listening to the repertoire. If you're even semi-serious about learning how to play jazz, then make it your main genre of listening.

Since you come from a blues background, take a look at Don Mock's DVD" The Blues from Rock to Jazz." I found it to be quite good.
