Default Modern Method Threads

Frank (Fep) informed me that the original thread was getting long, and asked that I split it into two. Just keep me updated and I'll move necessary posts each week so that each week has a thread. I'm also going to stick these threads so they're at the top.

Hi Mr Beaumont, we have a new thread now (pp 12-14). Just wondering if you're going to sticky each one, because as we go through the book, that will end up being a lot of stickies at the top of the page.

hmmm. I don't have an answer to this one.

Hopefully this will be a good place to put this. Doesn't fit into any of the study threads yet. I've been playing around with Leavitt's style of major scale fingerings for a while and like them for some tasks. Does anyone know of a resource anywhere that has all of the fingerings listed in a fretboard image style (as opposed to standard notation)? I've never seen such a document and it would be useful for me to see them that way. I also heard someone say once that here are several more than the main 5 listed in the first book. If it doesn't already exist, perhaps someone can point me to all the different fingerings in the book. Especially the extra ones, which I've yet to see. And I'll try to make my own sheet.

I have no idea, jaydogg, you may need to start a new thread with your question, as the study group hasn't reached that far in the first book.

The five major scale fingerings in Leavitts book are it. These fingerings are sometimes broken further into seven fingerings, one for each note in the scale, but this is not necessary.

As for image of patterns, Google is your friend. Just use
Google search!

I used google search for this with no luck many times in the past. Looks like you had no luck either because those aren't the right fingerings :-P Leavitt uses finger stretches instead of hand shifts. Anyone else luckier than us?

Well that figures since I never read the book.

I better stay out of this thread.

Now that I checked out the fingerings in the MM thread I see they are variations of 3 note per string fingerings.

Interesting.

I went to the Berklee Press website looking for info on the new Mick Goodrick book and found this (Modern Method for Guitar Jazz Songbook).

Berklee Press - Catalog - A Modern Method for Guitar Jazz Songbook Vol. 1

Has anyone seen the inside of this book? Is it just a pure songbook, or is there any instruction in it?

Only the first and third of those fingerings have any relationship to Leavitt's.

Hi Jay,

Volume 3 shows you (just for one example!) how to play in all 12 keys without leaving a position. And how to play, say, a D major scale using 12 different fingerings. Here's an old link of mine that still works - if you make a fretboard chart, do share!

I've been wondering the same thing. It's going to turn into a lot of stickies, and general discussion will end up on the second page, which is probably not a good thing for the forum generally.

Why not create an entire forum devoted to modern method/other methods instead of making so much stickies.

Yeah, it's gonna be too many stickies.

What I'm going to try is just keeping the current thread "stuck." I don't have the access to create a whole subforum just for these threads--nor do I really like that idea as eventually this process will "end."

Let's see how this works out.

That's a good idea. In a way it's quite nice having the MM thread interspersed here as many folks come here fresh and lurk in the 'getting started' thread - without knowing that MM might be for them, while they would never just click on a MM forum or subforum.

Is there a way to add links in this thread that would point to all of the other MM discussions so they'd be easy to find?

An idea is to add the links in the first post by the thread starter (Jeff or fep?).

Yes, that's a good idea. Maybe Fep, since he uploads the weekly pages could make an index, then that index could be made a sticky as a reference to the other lessons??? Either way though, I'm cool however it happens.

That's an excellent idea. I will get that done today.
