Default Cmaj7 C Ionian notes

Question
I learned the notes to the C Ionian, now I'd like to go to another chord using a chord progression. What chord would you recommend next? Using the next chord, I'd have to use the notes in that chord, but can you tell me the notes, please.

thank you

Hi Mississippi!
Could you share a little about what you know so far? Your question seems like a huge one and I know you've been with the group since 2007:

So I gather you're not asking about basic information, and there've been tons of threads about progressions and how to play them posted in the 14 years since you first posted this question. What did you get out of Ionian?
You're probably not looking for a basic answer, so could you help us out here?
Thanks!
David

A whole mess o' lydian.

Raid the Phrygian!

Don't be an A-holian.

In before the Locrian.

Hi David
Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner after this, but after posting this thread, I found myself permanently banned. No joke, either.
My question, I did want to keep it "simple". I learned the chord (Cmaj7 and the notes to go with it). I wanted to go to another chord (using Cmaj7) that made musical sense in a chord progression and wanted to know which notes to use with the next chord. I then was going to continue expanding with what I learned by asking, and then continue asking for a new chord and notes that fit that chord progression. I really thought it was a simple question, but... maybe not. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi m.

I donīt know if the "one chord at a time" tactic really is the best option, but you have to know that for yourself.

I strongly suggest you learn a dominant chord next. Maybe G dominant, so you can play G7 - Cmaj7.
When you have the dominant chord pat down you can start playing simple jazzblues forms.

I hope I didnīt misunderstand your question.

Cheers,
H.

Hi Helgo

For me the way I have to learn is "just me", but... Yes, I think you nailed it as to what I'm looking for. So G7 is the first chord and then Cmaj7 is the second chord. Is that right? I'm not too sure what the notes would be yet, but I'll try to figure it out and let you know. Now the G7 would be played at the 3 fret, at least that is where I want to keep it.

For the G7 chord, is this right

6th string 3 fret
5th X
4th 3 fret
3rd 4 fret
2nd X
1st X

Thanks

I know you're answering Heigo here but I've gotta jump in here. I have to say that that's not a G7 I've ever used but after trying it out, it's really great and amazing. It's like I've never worn my shirts inside out before but after I do, it's quite comfortable having the seams on the outside, the smooth part inside. Thank you for adding a touch of genius to this forum. And don't take it personally that you were banned, maybe there's another forum for tongue in cheek practical jokers with a penchant for condescending humour.
Certainly not enough of that here!
David

Hi David
Thanks for the kinds words of encouragement. Humor is something I kind of need in my life at the moment.

Could you give me the right fingering for the G7 chord please.

Thanks

mississippi
