Newbie! Arranging for 4 horns

Hey guys, I`ve got an issue. When arranging for more than two voices I often find that the lower voices tend to get pretty monotonous lines, so I`ve been taught to join figures and change them a bit in order to get a more rounded up line.

What I mean is that sometimes the lead voice (melody) moves but the bottom voices remain the same (happens on chords with more than 4 notes usually), so instead of playing a whole note, for example, I write two half notes for those voices.

The thing is that sometimes the melody moves in a normal way but the bottom voices move in quite an uneven way. For example I might have a melody thats purely moving on eighth notes but my bottom voices move by a dotted quarter note, then a half note then a quarter, and so on...

is this the right thing to do? or should I stick to the figures in the lead voice regardless of how monotonous the bottom voices might end up?

(I hope I`ve made myself clear)
