Help notation question - slur

Seems it's my day for asking basic questions - thanks in advance for responses.

I am playing from 25 Graded pieces for plectrum guitar (ed Ingram)
25 Graded Pieces for Plectrum Guitar: Amazon.co.uk: Adrian Ingram: Books

It's all treble clef - no tab.

First off I thought if two notes were slurred then I should hammer on or pull off as appropriate. Now I come to a tune where the slurred notes are marked as picked down up down up. I take it my original assumption was wrong and I should just pick? Direction is sempre legato.

Yes, I know I can actually play it how I like, but my aim here is as much to work out what the notation conventions are.

Another piece I've been trying to hammer on, but struggling to make the note sound, so if I get to pick that would be even better!

Sliding is also a slur technique. You said the notation is telling you to pick these parts. What is the question? Do you think the manuscript is incorrect? It does seem odd, it's like telling a reed player to tongue a slur...it makes no sense. I avoid picking slurs.

My guess...

Is there a rest before the note?

If so, pick a note a half step below the notated note and slide or hammer into the target note from there (like a grace note but you only pick the first note).

Otherwise it's probably just an error that the editor didn't catch.

Here's the first example, which I thought I should hammer on (no way could I slide this while holding the other notes)

The second example, with picking marked:

1st ex: hammer-on

2nd ex: the upstroke on the E (on the "and" of 3) is incorrectly marked. This should be a pull-off, IMHO.

Got it, thanks. Maybe the picking marks just mean, pick alternate, and isn't meant to be taken literally?
