Default What would be better.. Learn songs from the Real Book? or

If you HAD to pick one.

What would be better.. Learning songs from the Real Book? or learn songs from the real books that include the lyrics-vocals? Instead of learning the instrumental versions. I would think it would be better overall to learn the actual songs with the vocals on them? the older standards sung by the great jazz vocalists? or?

When playing a melody that has words I sing the song in my head. I THINK Dexter Gordon was quoted as getting miffed when he forgot the words to a song while playing his horn.

It is simply a way to alter our phrasing on our instrument. I like the Chuck Sher books for this reason, along with alternate changes.

Imo although if all other things are equal I'd want the lyrics also. But all other things are not equal...

Your first book should be The Real Book, the same one that everyone has. Because, that's the same one that everyone has.

I use the Real Book chart but study vocal versions to find the interpretation that suits me best, then I base my version of the tune on that.

I find studying the lyrics a huge help with the rhythm of the melody in a lot of standards. Plus, on a more cerebral level, you need to know the words to really get inside the song.

I like to use the Fakebook Index The Fake Book Index
to find all the versions of a tune I have in fakebooks, then search on iTunes to find all the recordings I've purchased. Then get to work!
