| | What to learn... Hi, I'm pretty new. I've been playing for about 11 months now, and i'm getting into jazz. However, I need to know what to go about learning as I don't have a teacher. I've learned some chord theory I guess, I can make triads and 7th chords, I also know the dom. and min 7th arppegios and some of the melodic, natural, and harmonic minor scales. I've got a lot of time on my hands the next few days, so I need to know what to learn to improve my knowledge and understanding |

Don't jump into playing advanced material too soon, really nail improvising on easier tunes first.

| | Reading and tunes.
If you have accomplished as much as you have in 11 months, you are doing great! Do you mean to say that you have been playing jazz for 11 months or you have been playing guitar for 11 months? Either way, it sounds like you are on the right track.
What tunes have you worked on so far? |

| | yea..learn tunes...from real book or wherever...easy ones first as was mentioned previous...
learn to read >>>from mel bay modern guitar method...although not jazz related ..you do learn where the notes are on the fingerboard...sight reading...rhythm exercises..and more...
then the berklee guitar series (three volumes)...should be next or vist the mel bay site for a catalog of guitar books...or jamie aebersolds site for the same..
and check out bert ligons site..much info there
and much info right here on this site..
time on the instrument...pierre |

| | Learn how to transcribe so you learn how solos go, because its all not just scales and arpeggios. Learn how to improvise melodies with your, uh...arsenal?
Eventually with these transcriptions you'll learn about chromatic notes you can throw inside the scales to make it sound more interesting.
Basically, learn how to use all these things you know in all your playing, like, you know you can use harmonic minor and melodic minor over most chord types? Melodic minor (modes of the scale), especially, is a really cool sound over dominant and half diminished chords. But you'll learn all these things by transcribing. |

Nuff Said | This is where I'm at with my lessons. My instructor has asked me to bring 5 tunes to work on next week. Since I'm pretty new to jazz, can you suggest something that a newbie like me can handle? |
