Default Play Better Jazz Guitar in 30 Days Series

This month on my site, instead of posting general lessons that aren't related to each other, at least in a row, I thought it would be fun to run a series of articles called "Play Better Jazz Guitar in 30 Days"

Each day's article will feature a different topic ranging from scales and modes, to chords and comping, to ear training, learning tunes and the dreaded topic of sight reading.

If you're interested you can follow each new article as it goes live at the following link:

Play Better Jazz Guitar in 30 Days | MattWarnockGuitar.com

And I'll post each new lesson in this thread so you can find them easily.

The first lesson went live this morning discussing ways to learn and practice the modes of the major scale

How to Practice Major Scale Modes for Jazz Guitar | MattWarnockGuitar.com

This was a fun project to put together so I hope you dig reading it as much as I did writing these 30 lessons!

cool BDG, glad you dig it!

I've had people asking about getting the articles each day. here are some ways you can do that if you're curious.

if you commented on this thread, then when I post the new article each day you'll get an email alerting you

you can bookmark the main page for the 30 Day Project and just visit anytime after 9am EST when the new article will appear

you can subscribe to my RSS feed and have them delivered to your readers each day

or you can follow me on twitter or facebook and I'll send them out there as well

you can do any of those things, rss, fb or twitter, by clicking the links on the right side of any page on my site where it says "connect"

thanks for all the support everyone!

Here is day two's article, a lesson on learning and practicing dominant cycles. Something that is a great tool for any jazz guitarist, but that we often overlook in our practicing. Check it out!

No no! lol that's way too much work, I recomended just spending a little time reviewing the major modes, or if you don't know them, pick one you don't know and learn it that day. You should always have a number of things going on in your practice routine, scales are just a part of that routine. So if you are unfamiliar with a mode learn that one, or review a mode you know with a new pattern, 3rds, triads etc, but don't spend more than 20-30 minutes on it before moving on to something else.

Definitely going to be following: your post on learning all the modes from slight modifications to the same fingerings was extremely helpful. I also really loved your post about analyzing Miles' solo on Kind of Blue.

This was a fun project to put together so I hope you dig reading it as much as I did writing these 30 lessons!
I opened up my Sibelius on my home PC desktop (because I finally got back home last weekend!), and wrote up some melodic sequences that I wanted to list for practicing the modes from Matt's first lesson. So let's call this a supplement to Matt's lesson.

Edit: That D note in measure 34 s/b an A note, I corrected it on the pdf below. I also reloaded the pdf as the previous one was reporting an error when you tried to open it. Seems there's a problem with the site? Anyways, I put it at Box.net if you want to download or print it:

Here is Day 3's lesson, a very cool technical exercise to help you develop finger dexterity and to get around those tricky 2 and 3 string barres with your 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers.

check it out!

Very cool! I will go back and forth from the computer courses I do now to these! So that way it doesn't get stale.

Right now I am practicing playing majors, minors and doms (drop 2 and drop 3) in their first and subsequent inversions in all kinds of orders.

Very cool Barry, glad you dig it! If you're looking for a new chord voicing to check out, try Drop 2 and 4, very cool voicings and they add a nice mix to Drop 2 and Drop chords.
