Default Band in a Box on the way

I wasn't sure what category to put this in, so I decided to stick it in the Getting Started section since I'm getting started. Anyway, I ordered Band in a Box 2011 last night and am excited to get it so that I can practice some soloing. There are some good improvements from 2010 version, so it seems well worth it. Maybe my dreams of 1MB (one man band) can now materialize.

I am sure you will like it...great to practice with....I have BIAB 2009, but the Real Band upgrade in 2011 sounds much better. What is alos cool is there are some interesting styles, like Freddie Green, which is a pretty good start to see his three voiced chords..There is a guuitar fretboard you can toogle on and see where the chords/how they are played...

Have fun!!

I've been using it for about 2 years now; my playing improved phenomenally since I started using it. I think you'll be impressed.

BIAB, a Real/Fake book, lots of time and you're well on the way...

I've had my BIAB since 2007 and use to make midifiles that I import to Cubase and let them trigger the workstation Hypersonic to get better sound.

BIAB can be experienced a little stiff after you used it for a while so to get that live-feeling I have also The Real Book Play-A-Long Volume 1. It seems to be out of stock, but there's a Volume 2 on the Aebersold store now...

Jamey Aebersold Jazz: The Real Book Play-Along - Volume 2 - Set of 12 CDs

I downloaded BIAB Christmas Eve (-and on into Christmas Day: it takes a l-o-n-g time to download all of it!) I love it. Wish I had a hard copy of the manual--thought of printing out the pdf but that would be thick as a phone book and about as unwieldy. But it's a great thing that I'm sure you'll love right away.

I found this--very cool--but the fretboard lays on top of the BiAB page's row of controls. How do you deal with that?
Also, and more importantly, can you move through a song chord-by-chord *without* the music playing, just to get down the sequence of voicings before worrying about playing them up to tempo????

Jokron, how did you like that approach? I've been toying with doing something similar (maybe Ableton Live or grabbing the Garritan Jazz and Big Band libraries, or both), and using Impro-Visor or the cheaper version of BIAB to generate MIDI.

I think I might spend the equivalent money to getting the full ultrapack, so maybe costs are comparable, but I was wondering if the MIDI route produces better tracks/more freedom, or if the features of a MIDI sequences/workstation are too excessive for someone who just wants backing tracks (mostly).

Default BiaB2011

@markerhodes,the fretboard overlay will resize and you can move it around,it doesn't stop the controls working..Plus you could just loop the chords in section sizes of your choice 2,4,8 bars even slow the tempo down.
The new realtracks are as a general rule far better than midi sounds,But if midi turns you on you can always use realband to finish tracks of.Why would you want to? Well Realband will open baiaB files and handle realtracks.

By the way happy new year

Tom

As an after thought you could get BiaB to tab the chords out for you, then print them out

Yeah, that's the ticket! Thanks. I know just what you mean---I feel dumb for not thinking of that! Oh well, as Will Rodgers said, "We're all ignorant, just on different subjects..."
