The recently passed Jazz notable, Billy Taylor's free .pdf:

About Billy Taylor:

The Official Website of Billy Taylor - Jazz Pianist and Educator

Billy Taylor was a familiar face on TV.

He played piano here in an early jazz program "The Subject is Jazz" made in 1958. These are available on youtube and also a modern version of the show. Very interesting.

Jazz is made up of so many styles that it's impossible to pin down. When you have a melody and a progression, you substitute chords for others and you improvise a lot. That covers such a very wide range. I've picked myself a style that I like and I stuck with it. That's jazz for me.

Yes, well-done introductory pamphlet for someone who has never studied or played or heard jazz, or for someone who doesn't know its history. Is there something in there that you think is essential for folks in this forum to know about?

Jazz is a feeling in the way you play the tune to make it sound like jazz...

It's like "It's not the words--but how you say them"...

Articulation and inflection takes time on the instrument to accomplish...

Time on the instrument...pierre
