Help really frustrating picking problems

whenever i use only a twisting motion, pr only a knocking motion, or only side-to-side, or only finger motion, my picking swings. like, the up stroke is closer to the down stroke. however, when 'just pick', like using a general combination of motions, my picking falls apart. i can play some things decently fast, like over 10 notes per second, but the truth is that my picking is really inconsistent. even at 3 notes per second! my picking feels unstable. i feel like my wrists just suck. blah.

to clarify, it's like my pick fails to uhh move to the other side of the string. obviously a down stroke should be going down and an upstroke should go up, but i'm not able to actually perform either one correctly. it really sucks. it's like no matter how good my picking gets, i still can't pick right.

I'd just stick with the twisting, knocking motion if that works best. Maybe you need a different pick.

Slow Down!

If you can't play consistantly at a given tempo, the solution is to slow way, way down and concentrate on the movements until they become second nature. Then and only then should you start to speed up. It would be useful to use a metronome and keep a practice log until you see the results you desire.

If you practice fast and sloppy, you'll perform the same way.

Regards, monk

You could try hybrid picking when switching strings. So, if you are playing on the third string, and you have to jump to the first string (or even the second) you can use your middle finger (right hand) and it will save you a lot of movement. Also, you can use legato to make your right hand work less. I tell you this because my picking isn't the best neither. A combination of hybrid picking and legato will make the things easier, but I still advice you to keep working on the picking slowly and carefully.
