Default quick question, what mode/scale would be used over a 7#9 chord

just jamming over a progression and wanted to add a little texture, but i didnt remember what scale works, for example if i am using Db7#9 what would work? altered scale/melodic minor scale id believe just unsure of where id place the root. if anybody could answer this for me id appreciate it

you can think melodic minor up a half step if you want but it would be more correct to think Db altered both contain the same notes but i think this using relative scales can cause problems with regard to which tones you are gravitating towards.Hope this helps.

diminished will work also...

Or is it's called by many in my neck of the woods, the diminished dominant scale.

You could think of the Db7#9 as a G13 - so you could also use anything that would work over this i.e. D melodic minor.

Db minor pentatonic, Eminor Pentatonic or you could think its an E triad over a C# triad (Db) and see what that does for you or yu could just play around with the arpeggio: Db E F Ab Cb

good ol blues scale works nicely, if the chord sounds "bluesy" in context.

If it doesn't, my go to is a 13b5 arpeggio from the tritone sub--kinda like steve's idea.

I also like John's triadic idea--this is something i need to work on more.

or just take whatever scale you use for 7th's and sharp the 2nd/9th.

half-whole diminished
Altered (MelMi up a 1/2 step)
Minor Pent (up a b3)

Remember its a color tone so you don't have to play it you can just treat the chord like a straight 7th.
