Default Method for your madness

Just a suggestion to help pull things together.

When you practice a tune try this process:

1) Pick a tune and beginning key!

2) Play an intro. Don't know an intro? Oh boy, then you need to learn a couple intros.

3) Play the melody for a chorus.

4) Comp the chords in the tune for a chorus.

5) Improvise a solo over the chords in the tune for a chorus.

6) Play the melody for a chorus.

7) Play an ending. Don't know an ending? Oh boy, then you need to learn an ending or two.

8) Move the tune through the circle of 4ths or 5ths and repeat steps 2-7.

9) Develop a repertoire of tunes.

Do this for a long, long time.

(You could also play a chord melody for step 3 or 6 if you like and can manage it.)

Interesting way to learn a song. I'd suggest to do an analysis of the structure and harmony prior to start playing anything. I never did that thing of playing it in different keys, but great musicians have recommended it to me, so it must be good.

This is not a way to learn a song. You already have to know it.

It's a way to brings different aspect of the tune together rather than practicing disjointed parts.
