Greetings and suggestions Hey all! I'm stoked that I found this forum. I've had a guitar for a few years but have been playing every chance I get for around 6 months or so. In the past its always been strumming. I have yet to get an instructor(that's on my list). Pitt and Duquesne are close by so I think I can find a good student-teacher in their jazz programs. I have "The Total Jazz Guitarist" by Jody Fisher and a cool book called the "Guitar Scale Guru" by Karl Aranjo that seems to break threory down well for simple me : ) This stuff is way harder than math and science...you should all give yourselves a pat on the back. My favorite thing to do, however is make music. I've been playing and transcribing into tab a lot of solo melody. Melody is my favorite part of songs I think and I love listening to jazz that kicks yet still preserves the melody well. Like I think Charlie Parker kills it, yet in most recordings I have still maintains the melody. Anyhew...I think I have a decent ear(at least my melodies sound good to me LOL) and transcribing and playing songs seem to boost my technique, speed, and fretboard knowlege. I can play a dozen or so songs off the top of my head so far. In the past week or so I've been playing Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'" and can do some improv on it, Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here," and trying to emulate Coltrane on "My Favorite Things." I can get the notes to swing ok, I think. Its so much fun, I love it! Anyways, Hello, and I'll gladly and humbly accept any advice/recommendations. I need to start incorporating chords into my playing at some point but it seems a daunting task. LOL. I've been working on your Autumn Leaves lesson that's on here. I'm still completely memorizing the melody. It's such a pretty tune and in keeping with our season here in PA. I'm sure I'll be doing more lurking and listening than participating, but thanks for having me. I look forward to some suggestions.
Sincerely,
Dave |
