Newbie! Adding jazz spice to an acoustic song

I love this song "Lemon tree" by Fool's Garden and tried to arrange for an acoustic version with a singer. What I've came out was from an accident--I have no real knowledge on Chord Progressions and even Jazz. Although I'm starting to learn it by actually putting myself in the field of the unknown and start making sense out of something.

Moving on. This is what I came out with. It sounds great and jazzy, but actually "found" it by accident. I left out the other notes for my bass.
Intro/Verse: Dm7 Am7 Gm7

---------------------------------------------
---6----5---3--------------------------------
---5----5---3--------------------------------
---7----5---3--------------------------------
---5-----------------------------------------
--------5---3--------------------------------

And the chorus was a little iffy so I looked it up online and found this chord progression:
Chorus: F C Dm Am Bb C F C Dm Am Bb Bm/5- C

This chorus sounds really plain and does not match with the intro/verse that I made. I was prepared to randomly play chords until I find something that connects and eventually figure it all out, but it will be much faster to come here and gets things (such as resources and pointers) I could start out with.

Anyways, how do I get this chorus to sound like my intro/verse? I know there is this thing called "key", "scale" and those "number progressions" that other jazz players talk about. What is mine?

This song is in the key of F, the reason your harmonies and the harmonies you got from the internet don't match is because you are using 7th chords (4 notes) and the open chords for the chorus are triads (3 notes), trust me on this one

maybe try doing the same chords for the chorus just add 7th's to them

Fmaj7 C7 Dmin7 Am7 Bbmaj7 etc...

BTW the functional diatonic 7th chords in this key are...

FMaj7 Gmin7 Am7 BbMaj7 C7 Dmin7 Emin7 (b5)

Try messing with them and see if you can find what you are hearing. good luck

Thanks for your reply! It is still difficult to find the tune I want but I'd give it more time!

Edit: Okay after hours of trying I nailed the chorus part, but now im lost in the Bridge part.
The bridge goes like this: A7 Dm C F C#m/5-
A7 is already on the 7th... so how do i get this guy to match my tune?

Try the same thing again. you could make the A7 an A9 to add a bit more color.

A9 Dmin7 C7 FMaj7 etc...
