Default just a bit of help would be nice?

hi, i’m 17 and play jazz generally. i am off to a music school next year to study jazz guitar and at the moment i use a gretsch g5120. it’s got a lovely tone but i’m just wondering if anyone has any tips for getting a bit of a more jazzy sound out off it?

What strings do you have on it? If roundwounds, try a set of flats, and maybe go up a gauge.

How do you have the tone control set? Try rolling it back.

What amp are you playing through, and what are the settings there?

i'm not actually sure what strings i'm using. i havent really checked. my friend was borrowing it and put new strings on.

i genreally have the tone rolled back just a tick and have the flip switch so its using both pick ups

i can't really afford a incredibly flash amp. it's just a behringer 60 w somthing a rather.

i usually have the tone settings on the amp at about

bass= 10
Mid = 7
treble = 9

Hi!
Difficult to give advice about sound without hearing it. In general I would try to boost the mids rather than the bass on your amp. Roll back the tone controls on your guitar as goshawk said and use only the neck pickup (I'm not familiar with the gretsch g5120, to be honest).
Try out flatwounds and a heavy pick, one from the Dunlop Jazz Series f.e. Wooden picks can also add nice colour to your sound - In general, it's amazing how much strings and the type of pick can influence sound.

In Jazz, lots of players are looking for the "sweet spot" (there are some posts about this here), meaning a certain point where your picking and tone mount up to the utmost presence and delicacy. Again, difficult to describe, but once you've hit it you will be able to readjust your guitar and amp accordingly.

Hope this helps.

On my Gretsch 6120 i turn down the master volume and turn up the amp. This mellows out the tone.
