I don't have an exact quote but I have a recording of a john medeski interview, he said he would begin his practice time trying to imitate natural sounds or movements, like, he'd try to play the sound of a lizard scurrying across the floor, It's a great exercise when your bored/overwhelmed with theory

If you want to stay sane, never read the Gibson Corporate Problems thread!

I just said that.

Excellent, funny thread this one, Sailor, congrats on your idea.

Found this Jimmy Raney Quote: "Your melodic gifts really come out when you're playin' a ballad. It's one good way to separate the artist from the bullshit artist. Musicians who can play a million notes and run all over the guitar and sound very impressive are playing their practiced patterns. Give them a slow ballad and then see what their melodies are like. Slowed down a lot of people sound dull and boring."

Default melodic improv

Jimmy Raney had it right! Improvising on a ballad sets you free allowing more time to play what you hear.

I may have found that quote on this forum. Either way, it is my favorite to date.

A local tenor player was doing an improv class at a local community college, and another guitar player asked him a question about being original. He said "I am just afraid that if I play in a certain way I will sound too much like Wes Montgomery." The clinician responded, "If you sound so much like Wes that it is to a fault, I will hire you for a gig this instant."

I loved that!

paraphrased brutally, from Ted Greene:
