Default What's up? Been trying to analyze music lately?

Hi guys!

It's been a long time since I posted a thread here and im really happy to be writing one as of now. School's done, so i'm glad to be having a big break as of now (waiting for high school graduation fyi). More time for guitar! HAHA

So lately, i've been trying to listen to the usual instrumentals. I have been trying to understand how Eric Johnson gets his technique and feel of the guitar. People say that it comes from within, yes, but I was just wondering how to approach analyzing each guitarists' style.

There you go, hope you get to post a lot of insights!

P.S

Anyone willing to be my Skype guitar tutor for the summer? Haha!

Nothing beats slowing down their solos and notating them note for note. After you've done a few of them you'll notice that most players have phrases and devices that they use all the time but with variations. Look for how they connect phrases across the changes, or how they weave arps and chromatic lines together. Some players have favorite rhythmic patterns that they use over different note sequences. It will be a real exercise in discovery that will expand your musical horizons and eventually influence your playing.

Eric has 2-3 instructional vids where he breaks down what he is doing. You should be able to find them for sale used on amazon, or rent them thru netflix or whatever.
