Default Brian Blade

I've been on a Brian Blade kick since seeing him play with Wayne Shorter a little over a year ago at Yoshi's in Oakland. What a phenomenal musician-- not just drums. Songwriter, singer, etc. Whether it is the stuff he did as The Fellowship, as part of the Wayne Shorter quartet, his trio, with Wolfgang Muthspiel, or on any myriad number of other recording, he is simply amazing. His live performance are even more particularly great, in that his passionate play is really intoxicating and pulls you right in. Usually, I am watching the guitarist, but simply great!

and the Wayne Shorter Quartet. This is the lineup I saw at Yoshi's. Check out how Brian just builds and builds. About 5:00. And, the other guys are pretty darn awesome, as well.

Great stuff. I really get into a couple of jazz drummers. Ari Hoenig and Kenny Wollesen. Here is a clip of the Kenny Werner (Effortless Mastery) trio. Notice how Ari and Kenny face each other. When I saw them play a few years ago, it was like watching a game of musical tag. Very inspiring.

Kenny has recorded and toured with Norah Jones and Bill Frisell, among others. I saw him with Steve Cardness, and he was just killing. At that point, I had never seen someone do so much with such a stripped down kit, and have such a sensitive approach to the music.

Here's my favorite Brian Blade tune-- Return of the Prodigal Son. It long enough to be in two parts on youtube. This melody and performance really connects with me.

I just went to a very cool gig...

Ron Miles, Brian Blade and Bill Frisell in our local jazz club - Dazzle. Billed as the Ron Miles trio, it was my first time seeing each of them live and each member was incredible. As a trio - simply awesome.

That sounds great! I hope they put out a performance album.
