Default Most Memorable Tune

I liked seeing peoples favourite jazz albums in the recent thread. It got me wondering if people have all time favourite Composition.

It does not need to be something technically challenging, although It may well be. Just a tune that stuck with you from the day you heard it. Or maybe it grew on you over a period of time and it's now always at the top of your CD rack.

For me it's ' The Fields, The Sky ' as recorded in 1983 by the Pat Metheny Group.
This tune just cuts right through me every time I listen to it. Such a lovely story and it flows unlike anything I have heard before or since.

How about yourself?

Default tune

I am currently into "Ceora". Also, Thelonius Monks' "Round Midnight" and "Ruby My Dear"

It has to have a melody I can whistle. "Bluesette." Damn you, Toots, I can't stop whistling it!

Great tune. We played that last semester in our little 7-piece combo.

Right now for me, the songs I can't stop humming are:
  • "On the Sunny Side of the Street" (Jimmy Smith, "Back at the Chicken Shack").
  • "Monk's Dream" (Larry Young, "Unity")
  • "Bemsha Swing" (Thelonius Monk, "Essential Thelonius Monk")
  • "Miles' Mode" (John Coltrane, "Coltrane")

Wow - very tough to pick just one! But for some reason, Gary Burton doing, "My Foolish Heart," from the album, "Lofty Fake Anagram," (I think) comes to mind first.

Hank Garland's take on All the Things You Are, from Jazz Winds from a New Direction. Classic, well known tune, played as never before or since IMO.

Me, it's "It's Only a Paper Moon", by Nat King Cole. I just LOVE it. Also-A nightingale sang in Berkley Square. Although, for songs running through my head at the Moment, theres a few-That's Life (Sinatra version), Lost by Buble and The first time ever I saw your face, simply because they're numbers I've to learn for an upcoming charity bash. The show will have lots of different singers and dancers, of all styles, so we put together a hybrid band-Bass, Drums, Me on guitars and a keyboard player, plus a 6 part brass section. 21 songs to learn in 18 days. Fun, fun, fun!

my top 5:
5 Once I Loved- (Antonio Jobim)
4 All The Things You Are (J. Kern)
3 Summertime (J. Gershwin)- most well-known tune.
2 Slow Hot Wind(H.Mancini)
And the First is... "The Pink Panther Theme" by Henry Mancini!

Too many favourites to have a Favourite.

Currently - Jonathan Kreisberg - Autumn In New York. Love that tune.

Oh, and a little waltz-time ditty entitled "Red Becomes Blue" by that less well-known English composer, Steve Duke. (Not to be confused with the saxophonist who teaches at Northern Illinois).

Catchy little tune. Just needs the ending finished off. BUT, everyone I play it to loves it and walks around singing it, which is a good sign, and other muso's want to play it, which is even better, so......hope for that Mango man yet.
