Default Apologies in advance!

I must apologise for the following daft idea, I clearly should be spending my time more wisely, but I thought it might at least raise a smile or two. I invented the mad game of starting with a YouTube video of one of my least favourite guitarists, namely this one! with the task of getting to a video of one of my favourites, Pat Martino, by clicking on the immediately displayed "related videos" list, in as few as possible steps. Counting the start and finish videos I was able to get to Pat Martino playing "Four on Six" in 14 steps! Can anyone beat that, or think of an even sillier one?

Yes, but how??? Actually I think the bit on the info section where he apologises for the sound is quite funny. He couldn't be attempting irony, could he?

And I just love the hair

Have to say, starting from your link I wasted 15 minutes of my life and ended up with Bob Dylan....

If you ended up with Bob Dylan I wouldn't call it a complete waste, if you ended up with Bob Dylan and whiskey I would call it time well spent.

No certainly not, just a silly joke and no offence intended to either Bob Dylan or his fans! Any particular whiskey (or whisky for the non-Irish)?

Haha, I have an Irish friend but I'm sorry to say I favor a scotch called Highland Park. That isn't to say I don't drink almost any whiskey put before me, provided it's a single malt or a good blend like Dimpel.

Though I've been in bars with an atrocious selection who made up for it with generous pours.

No, I would have to agree that although the Irish are said to have invented the drink, the Scotch have made it their own, or very nearly. Nice choice though, I have sampled that one myself on occasion. Sadly, whisky is near the top of a list of things my Doctor does not like me to consume, so it is restricted to special occasions for me these days...

He's a metal boy. It's all about speed and volume. Hey, I used to emulate that sort of thing in my teens too.

This Michael Angelo whatsit fellow I mean. Don't forget that a lot of fusion music sounded very much like that in the 1970s and 80s.

I am indeed the poorer for no whisky (I will allow myself a couple at Christmas though), but have to correct you - I am most definitely male! I guess my "Meggy" username does sound somewhat feminine so an easy mistake to make, but in my case it is a term used for anyone born in the seaside town of Cleethorpes in the UK!

Well, I suppose there is some fusion stuff like that out there franco! And for that metal scene it does indeed seem to be all about speed and volume! I admit I will never have half his speed. But it's just not my thing at all, although I did go through an early phase of wanting to play like Allan Holdsworth, no slouch in the speed department himself. But for me he has far more depth and meaning, which I think is what keeps me interested in his music. But I meant to offend no-one, it was just a daft game, honest!

Actually I don't actually know that but Cleethorpes people really do refer to themselves as "Meggies". There must be some interesting historical reason behind this - I will have to do a bit of research now!

Hey...Meggy... thanks, I've never actually been able to listen to that direction of music, I have tons of chops, so the speed thing doesn't mean much, but when I checked it out... hey the guy had great left hand technique, more to the point his hand position was great, sorry... that's as far as I went...

Hi Reg, I have trouble liking this kind of stuff too - as I said in the original post, he is not one of my favourite guitarists. I just watched the clip again though, and as you say, he does have tremendous technique. But not for me musically, somehow I get bored very quickly with this type of guitar playing - it all sounds the same after a while. Some people say the same about jazz though!

Re: 'meggies" here's what Wiki has:

Local residents from the Humber area refer to Cleethorpes as Meggies but it seems very unclear where the name Meggie comes from. Some say that the top of Isaac's Hill used to be called Meg's Island, while others say a "meggie" was the cost of a tram fare from Grimsby to the resort. The term "Meggies" is used in Grimsby to refer to the town itself, as well as its inhabitants. Cleethorpes can also be known as "down beach". Locals call the beach, the sands.

And re: Six Degrees of Pat Martino, I'm having a bit of fun with it, so thanks!

Fascinating stuff, I did not know some of that, although I was born in Cleethorpes. The Meg's Island name for Isaac's Hill does ring a bell - I must have heard that used a few times. It is probably quite incorrect for me to use the term in the singular, but at least it is a way to get a name for the forum!

I had to laugh when I saw the video of Meggy's least favorite guitarist. I was hired to take that guy's place in a band once - about 25 years ago. I had never heard him play before, I only heard his name from the other guys in the band and that he had an uncontrollable need to shred.

Geez, no wonder they dumped him. The band played tunes by Steely Dan, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd etc. and that fellow probably played that style of guitar from the video on those tunes. Ouch.

If that's a Maserati, I'll go with a Porsche, thanks.

Saw this thread today. A few comments - first, at least he generally stays in the song's key, that shows some musical skill. Second, what would he sound like without the distortion?

This fifteen year old girl, Jacqueline Mannering, stopped me dead. She is VERY close to this guy.

Lastly, what does it really mean? Another style of guitar playing. But in the end I'll still listen to Wes Montgomery, Lenny Breau, or a similar style of guitar. Not a judgement, just a personal preference...
