Hey guys, can anybody recommend some artists/albums/songs which have very heavy dissonance and outside playing? Thanks and I really appreciate it.

There is sooo much stuff, the more specific you get, the better we can provide. Does it have to include guitar? Fusion/electric or acoustic/traditional?

The album Out To Lunch by Eric Dolphy was an early fave of mine. No guitar, but Bobby Hutcherson on vibes! An obvious influence on Frank Zappa.

    Thanks for the reply!
It doesn't have to include guitar, just jazz, of any era is fine!

I personally think Coltrane Live in Seattle is about as out as it gets.

John Zorn's Naked City is as far outside as it gets.

    'Ascension' by John Coltrane.

    'Free Jazz' by Ornette Coleman.

    Anything by Cecil Taylor.

    On guitar, Derek Bailey.

    Lou Reed Metal Machine Music?
Pat Metheny Zero Tolerance for Silence?

Some people would say The Shaggs.

This group played free way back when, and both Don and Attila are SO underrated:

Most any John Scofield material. He's a master at subtle dissonance, creating sonic tension and playing outside.

Sonny Sharrock - 'Ask the Ages'. With Pharaoh Sanders, Charnett Moffett and Elvin Jones. It's an under-appreciated classic.

I must just be really out. Scofield sounds mostly consonant to me. But I think I know what you mean.

Thanks for these fantastic replies! I’m trying to incorporate a lot of dissonance into my jazz and these are fantastic
