Help Playing by ear . . . suggestions?

Greetings all,

I recently realized that despite being an amateur guitarist for most of my life, I still have not spent any serious amount of time just training my ear. I would love to be able to start with ear training, so that I may be able to start transcribing from recordings (I can usually tell the color or many chords, but I am not great at finding the specific chord or series of notes in a melody).

I am wondering, however, where to start. Does anyone have a suggestion for a book/cd or software study course? My professional schedule prevents me from formal studies with a teacher at this time. Ideally, I would like something that I could work through in my free time (even with my IPod during my commute for some of the time).

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sweet Thanks for the tip.

Thanks! I'll check the software out when I get home from work. I see that there is a shareware version with a 21 day trial.

BTW - Ornithologist, is your screen name from being a fan of Charlie Parker, or - when you are away from your guitar - are you a scientist specializing in birds?

Does anyone have any other suggestions, or something to use as a supplement? Thanks again!

Well, like Wes Montgomery, I'd rather play octaves with a thumb. Playing them by ear sounds too dull, like latter day Pat Metheny tone.

I just love Charlie Parker and this particular tune.

Yeah, that's a smoker. I tried to play it out of the real book before I ever heard it. I didn't do it justice!
