| | I know, but I just wanted to point out that no one mentioned Emily, I think. I'm listening to her East to Wes album as we speak.

You need to read the first page or two of this thread, where this issue was soundly dealt with. Emily, Sheryl Bailey, Mimi Fox, et al, were raised as examples that women can match or exceed men on this or any other instrument if so inclined. |

Note to Dirk: Is there any way for threads to be 'locked', or 'closed', so that they may be consulted, but no longer added to, by either the OP or Admin? Just a thought; could be useful, perhaps, for some 'expended' subjects..?

| | There is a guy on another forum who fancies himself an expert on 'real' jazz. When I mentioned that I liked Mimi Fox, he told me that both she and Remler were overrated and were only successful due to being woman.
I think big ego mixed with lack of success equates to bitterness in a lot of musicians. It's easier for most people to dismiss others talents than to acknowledge one's own shortcomings. |

Then there was Mary Osbourne who played great jazz on a Gretsch White Falcon. If you really want some interesting trivia, very many years ago, the guitar was considered a parlor guitar which was thought of as --- a woman's instrument. Go figure. |

You have to learn to ignore them. Those are the people you will never convince of anything because they don't really care about the issue, just the impish glee they get from our exasperated responses. (I'm currently in a 12-step program myself to learn to ignore them.)
My goal is to one day be half as good as some of the fine women players mentioned here. He says their only overrated because they're women - I think he's underrating them because they are women. Some people just can't be objective about these things. (Oops, there I go again, off the wagon. Sigh.)
Peace,
Kevin

Peace,
Kevin | I hear that! I got Mimi Fox's live DVD recently and she is smokin'. I have a Sheryl Bailey organ trio DVD that is great as well. |
