Video Comment on my playing?

Hey people,

I'm and 18 y o guitar player from the Netherlands, studying Jazz guitar and I have this recording of me playing a solo over Just Friends at a session. I was wondering if you guys could give me some feedback! The final chorus is missing and since it's a session there are plenty of mistakes. Haha.

Cheers,

Diederik

Nice phrasing! Great use of space. Very appropriate playing for the genre.

Your time and sense of swing is fantastic for an 18 year old, to my ears, and that's usually my biggest critique of guitar players.

It seems the missing piece is really nailing the harmony better. The phrases have nice melodic contours, but I think you just need to study and practice the harmony more, chord tones specifically. I think this is what you referred to as "mistakes" - knowing the fretboard (and the tune) better will lead to fewer of these, so that playing on the changes requires no thought or effort whatsoever.

Simply practicing hitting chord tones on each change would do a lot for you, but you probably already do work on that a bit.

Also, I like hearing a #11 on a II7 when it comes up like it does in this tune.

Great job! I wish I was playing jazz like that at 18 - I definitely was not!

I think you now how you play.
Be carfull with harmony.
I hear some nice lines...
Good exe. is to practise solo guitar straight 8's only with metronome/ beat 2 4/.
Anyway you have good sound and feel.
You will play what you learn.

Thanks for the critique so far guys? Yeah the most difficult chords would be the Abdim7 and G7 (key of F). That is because I'm now learning how to think over functional diminished chords. Lot's of fun. And the lydian dominant scale is still in development too. I'm going to work on getting more out of that #11, thank you. @kris I kinda avoid this constant 8's with a metronome thing, it's a personal taste. Thanks for the idea though!
