Default The Joy of Sharing

My other hobby besides jazz guitar is collecting relatively high end audio equipment (all tubes), including a turntable, and records- mostly jazz, of course. On fairly regular occassions my significant other and I will spin records for most or all of the evening. Mary's taste in music tends to be 60s pop, like the Fifth Dimension and the Mamas and the Papas, or vocalists like Sinatra, Bennet, or Nat King Cole, which I like, too.

I generally limit the jazz I play during these sessions to vocals, like Ella or Dinah Washington. Last night, though, I put on Wes Montgomery and Wynton Kelly Smokin' at the Half Note. She absolutely loved it!

It was really great to be able to share something that I am so passionate about.

I'd like to hear about others that share their love for jazz and jazz guitar with significant others, or close friends or family.

I've got a girlfriend who loves this stuff too (well, she's a jazz and pop singer, and grew up on a steady diet of Cole Porter, Gershwin, Mancini and Shearing, so that probably explains it). it's nice having a partner in crime to share things with. Tomorrow night we're going downtown to hear some of the local heavy hitters do a Larry Young tribute (complete with B3!). Good food & drinks, pleasant company, great music - how much better can it get?

Default Great Jazz Partner

My wife & I are very fortunate; we are both musicians, music lovers and have been married for 55 years. She is a fine jazz vocalist, much like Ella Fitzgerald but really has her own style. I have been a guitarist on and off for about 60 years. We perform mostly the old standards and our favorites are jazz oriented. Needless to say, we have had a lifetime of musical enjoyment and our retirement years are wonderful with many opportunities to do what we love most. Although the performance opportunities have really slowed down, we still manage to perform on a pretty regular basis, a couple times a week. I spend most of my free time studying, practising, teaching and listening to our favorites. Those of you who worry about being too old to learn, just do it and love it and it will love you back. NEVER GIVE UP

I'm not quite as experienced in life as Wizard, but I can concur - it's never too late! I'm on the verge of earning my BM in jazz and I'm getting ready to turn 47. Life seems to get better as it continues...I never even knew there was this huge repertoire of great music spanning 100 years in my younger days!
