Default London calling

Hi,
Will be in London first 2 weeks of December and would like to hear some good local jazz guitarists - anyone have any suggestions? Also I'd like to torture myself by visiting music stores and lookingat archtops I can't afford, so any pointers there would be appreciated as well!
Thanks
jc

Hi JC
Take a look at these listings: http://www.jazzinlondon.net/JIL/Dec-11-seq.pdf Most London jazz venues are in there. December is a little quiet on the guitar front but here's a few suggestions.

My pick would be the Peter Ind trio at the 606 Club on Monday 5. Bassist Peter Ind is in his 80s now. He had a long association with Lennie Tristano and has played with Charlie Parker and most jazz legends. It's a guitar/bass piano trio. David Preston is a great guitarist.

Jim Mullen's organ trio are at the Red Lion in Isleworth on Monday 12 December. That's a bit of a journey out of town though.

On the 15 December, Jim Mullen is playing at a more central pub venue, The King and Queen.

Deidre Cartwright
is playing with a group at The Vortex on Wednesday 7.

Nicolas Meier leads a quintet at the 606 Club on Thursday 1.

Antonio Forcione has a run at Pizza Express from 9 to 13, with various lineups.

I was a tourist there last summer, and the bus I took from Soho to Trafalger Square went down this magical street called Denmark; it is full of music stores, all in a couple of blocks. Here's a Google Maps street view of it:

There must be other places in London, but this street was amazing. Lots of guitars, lots of stores. Just my experience, I'm sure someone who lives there has much more info.

I don't recommend Denmark Street at all, except for a little window shopping if you need to kill time in the area.

If you want to look at archtops, the only place in central London is Ivor Mairant's, just off Oxford Street. They usually stock a selection of Peerless, Eastman, Collings, Benedetto, D'Aquisto etc Jazz Guitars - Guitar & Bass
