Tal was a very special and unique player in jazz guitar history. His sound was equally unique. It is hard to get a sound like his. What I know about his gear is that he used all tube amps (Gibson GA's in the 50's and a Fender Twin in later years), used big luscious jazz boxes (Es-350, Tal Farlow Model, etc.), and medium gauge strings.
Other than this very typical setup of gear, it was all in his technique. His light touch and unusual way of playing lines and chords gave him that wonderful sound.
The all tube amp also, I feel has a great deal to do with getting a warm, but biting sound. I like only use all tube amps (you can see one of my youtube vids in my signature below) because I like the warmth and edge they give. Having quality guitar and quality humbucking pick ups also does a lot for the sound as well. My rhythm guitar plays an Emperor and the pick ups it has just don't do it justice, though I do not know how yours sound w/ the P90's.
Hope any of this was useful. Take care and great to have you on the forum.
