There are a couple of easy methods that you can get a ton of mileage out of. If you have at least a whole step between the current chord and the target chord, you can approach the target chord a half step away by using a diminished chord. So if you are going D-7 to Cmaj7, you can play D-7-Dbdim-Cmaj7, This has been around since Dixieland jazz.
The second, I got from Ted Greene. That is to approach the target chord by using any dominant chord from a half step above. So, if the target chord is D-7, you can use Eb7, Eb9, Eb13, Eb7#5, etc. Alterations per your taste. Love this approach, as it adds an increased sense of movement to the progression. You may already know these, if not, hope this helps. |
