Default My Little Boat

I love this song.

One day at Berklee, many years ago, with one of my Brazilian students, I opened the Real Book to this tune to show him something about using major scales in improv, and his face lit up. He said, "Ah, Roberto Menescal! Yes, my mother lives near him in Brazil. He really does have a little boat, and he loves to go out in it on the river."

Whenever I play this tune, to try to keep a relaxed feel, I visualize Roberto floating down a river in Brazil.

Here's a sound clip of my arrangement of it. I recorded this with my little Zoom digital recorder on a gig at the Powow River Grille in Amesbury, MA, last year.

you are welcome, happy to share.

for improvising, the transitions from ms 4 to 5 and 8 to 9 have half step resolutions between all chord tones, except the 7th, which is a common tone. very cool.

also, from ms 2 to 3, 6 to 7, and 10 to 11, the 6th of the major chord (a juicy note) is the 3rd of the following minor (ii7 function) chord, making for smooth lines.

cool, I'll bear that in mind. think my latin project (if I get it) will be mostly comping for now, but I def wanna work on improv unaccompanied so we can incorporate that when I'm ready chops-wise, too.
