Help Minor 7 Question

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to make a CM of "All of Me", in the 7th bar in the melody we have a G half note which is begging to be made into a chord. Trouble is that the chord should be a Dm7, the closest I can come up with is D7sus4 the next note is an F half note which can be made easily into a Dm7. My questions are, am I right and why is a Dm7 nominated by the composer when I cant see how he could achieve it. By the way, it dosnt sound out of place just dont know why.
This comes up a lot where the melody note is a 2 or a 4, your advice is greatly appreceated.

Steev

Hi Steev

The G in the D minor chord is an 11th.

On a minor chord, the upper extensions 9, 11 are actually very nice.

On the other hand, the 13 is regarded as an avoid note. (some say it's not..)

Same on major and dominant chords.

Major - Nice upper extension is 9th 13th. 11th is avoid.
Same for dominant chords.

A nice voicing for that situation is dm11 with a 9.

Thanks mate,
it really helped out, looks like I'll have to do some more reading on chord extensions then another part of the jigsaw puzzle will come together.
