Default Mickey Baker's lesson 1 chords questions

Hi,

I am dusting off my Mickey Baker's Jazz guitar book in an attempt to learn how to play Jazz guitar. I am stuck on lesson 1 and need some enlightenment here.

Chord 22 and 23, CMA9 and G13.

CMA9: C, E, A, D,G. Why is the A included in the chord tone, the major seventh of C chord should be B right? So why is he including the A which is the 6th and not the major 7th.

G13: G,F,B,E,A. Why is the A which is the ninth is included in this chord?

Thanks in advance for any assistance rendered.

Tom

I don't have the book, but...

C, E, A, D, G is a C 9/6 chord, not a CMaj9. Typo? If you're comping, subbing C 9/6 for Cmaj9 should work, but in a book I would want the names to be on the money.

G,F,B,E,A is a G13. A 13th chord has the notes: 1 3 5 b7 9 11 and 13. The 11 is often omitted because it clashes with the 3rd; for a different reason the root and fifth can be omitted, too (the bass will play them!). But it is common to include the 9th in a 13th chord. My favorite G13th is: 3x3200 (G F A B E).

At home I have a file with a list of the errors/misprints from the book. I'll take a look at it (if I remember).

Cma6/9 (as my book says is correct. Could be there is an error in earlier versions.

EDIT: I found a copy of the black one, and it is indeed Cma9 for the same chord that the updated version (the blue one) says Cma6/9.

Here's the Errata file. AFAIK, it applies mostly to the black cover version (I gave it to a student a few years ago) because, as Gersdal wrote, it is corrected to CMaj6/9 in the blue cover version.

I have both Mickey Baker books..Vol I & II..

To realize how old I am..I bought them new for $1.50 each..

Played through them many times...

Go slowly...get them in your head...play them over and over...

one should study chords and how they are spelled ... then you can find your own fingerings and inversions..

time on the instrument..pierre
