Good evening, Bernie, and seasons greetings...

Not much to say but...

'Hat's off, sir...".

I'm not likely to be comping over 'Diamond Dust' any time soon, being a humble home player, but these links are an opening into an eclectic and virtuoso world which I haven't seen or heard for many a long year. 'Enjoyable' would be an enormous understatement. My respect, and sincere warm thanks. 2011 is now already guaranteed to be a great year.
(I might try 'Lady of Perfidy', a pure gem, but I surely won't let you hear the 'balls-up' I'll make of it..! ...but the challenge, oh, the challenge...)

I rate this up there in my top 10 most interesting pieces especially with Nightclub 1960 I love how Al Di Meola interpreted Astor Piazollas masterpiece Diamond dust has a similar feel to it. I'll probably have to tab it out now thank you very much. I actually found this forum googling this tune

Thank you Bernie for writing such a beautiful and haunting composition. The Blow by Blow album helped open my ears up to Jazz. Thank you for sharing this with us. Larry

Hi all,

can somebody help me? I've never been able to make youtube running. How can I get the music made by Bernie?

Although I love diamond dust I am convinced that the current Jeff Beck Band (with that girl at the bass) could make a new version more "straight". Now I read they played a version in Japan live in 2005. Has somebody any idea if there is any more recent recording of diamond dust?

I tell you what. The greatest instrument is not in the hands of a musician but between the ears of the listener. When listening to the Blow By Blow version I find myself trying to fill in some kind of "holes" the soloists leave in the 5/4 count. The most strong parts of that version are the tune played by electric guitar and by the violins and the piano chords. The two solos I find a bit weak here and there and I have a guess why.

What is a solo? It is something like a flow, a stream, a river that is continuously floating. Jeff Beck's solo has perfect phrases (and sound) but I feel as if the river makes a pause once within each 5/4 bar. These musicians were used to make their solos in even counts and now that they have a uneven one they seemed to stumble a bit. I would love to listen to a remake.

Beside that it remains anyway one of only two songs in the world and history that makes my blood freezing and stop the time for a moment. Not that I should write this public but I prefer to listen to it while holding a cuddly toy in my arms.

Default McLaughlin Influence

Hi Bernie,
Just had a listen to the You Tube video of Diamond Dust.
Very nice. You mentioned how this came about through a McLaughlin angle.
I find it interesting that Beck opened up for the Mahavishnu Orchestra on the Blow By Blow tour.
How did Beck become exposed to this piece in the first place in order to decide to record it on what has to be one of the most influential instrumental guitar albums in history.
