Default Flat out interesting chord progressions

Whether it be the way it outlines the melody such as All The Things You Are or whether it is just a cool groove. I am in an accompaniment sort of mood, appease me. What are your favorites?

Bluesette is one of my all time favorite chord progressions. It is one of those progressions that (to me at least) just sounds wonderful by itself, even without playing the melody line, which is also beautiful, of course.

Default peace....

Horace Silver's tune. It has this great way of resolving a half-diminished down to a maj7 half a step down. Jobim likes to do that too, but it seems like a very guitar-centric thing to do.
The other is One Note Samba. Just goes around in handy little circles.

Those are all awesome. Anything by Jobim or most god grooving latin pieces seem to work. Bluesette and Peace were both awesome.

Default nice changes

I like "You Go To My Head", "Ceora" and almost anything by Jobim. My favorite way of playing guitar is playing changes without using the same chord voicing twice in one song. This approach can be challenging but the voice leading result is well worth the effort.

I am playing all of these charts I haven't touched in months, it feels amazing. I am about to go on a Jobim kick. Which album has the most and best of his material?

Oh, and by the way, one other one I didn't mention to you somewhere else ...

Amazon.com: The Legendary Joćo Gilberto: Joćo Gilberto: Music

For whatever reasons (I think there were copyright/licensing disputes), this is out-of-print. If you ever see one in a used CD shop, grab it!

In Nuages, the B section....when he goes from Cmajor to Cm9 then F7....so bluesy, down and dirty nasty....killer stuff.

Besides all of the above, the entire progression of chords in "The Man I Love" just slays me. Now that's bluesy. Also what Joe Pass does with the opening of "Cry Me a River", playing along with Ella. It's on youtube.

To Wizard 3739 - thanks a lot - I will try to get my head round this - it has one or two chords I'm not conversant with. I too want the arrangement to accompany a vocalist - my wife - who, without playing an instrument is a better musician than me - her voice being her instrument. Thanks again - you're a gent. Bluesybruce.

I'm kind of partial to Yardbird Suite. I also like How High the Moon/Ornithology. Lots of great harmonic movement.

I am a big fan of the clever and genious harmonization of Stella by Starlight. I love Giant Steps (no I don't play tenor at all) and think that just about anything by Jobim is worth studying in terms of harmony.

from a non-jazz perspective, "so long frank lloyd wright" by paul simon.actually, it's kind of a bossa nova...works well in a jazz context.

Default Cool turn around changes

Hello to everyone, I'm pretty new to chord melody and comping and learning some arrangements. I'm looking for some more turn arounds that sound jazzy/bluesy like G7 Eb9 D9 D7b9 two beats per chord for this example. I'm not real big on acrobatic stretches but just about anything else would be great. And thanks for being here.

I love "Gloria's Step," Scott LaFaro's masterpiece. Lush major seventh sounds are used to great effect. I know it from Bill Evans' "Sunday Night at the Village Vanguard." Anyone know of JG recordings of this tune?

Quarter note triplet feel in parenthesis. This is similar to the end of Wes's solo on Sundown.

Gmaj7 Gmaj7 (F-9 Bb7 F-9) / (E-9 A7 E-9) Eb-9 D7#9 / G7

I second Jobim.

Apart from that, I like Ellington tunes a lot. Many have some twists which makes you say "hey, hey, what was that?", and yet they sound so natural and convincing. "Warm Valley" is a favorite of mine. No need to spice it up with higher extensions and alterations. Just play the progression straight with three note shell chords, and the beauty of the progression itself comes through strongly.

Jimmy van Heussen is another favorite composer of mine (Polka Dots and Moonbeams, Here's that Rainy Day, It Could Happen to You, Darn that Dream etc.).

There is a chart on Free Jazz Website with Mingus' changes on it (at least for the gig that the poster played it on)

FreeJazzInstitute - Transcriptions

Steve Swallow's "Ladies in Mercedes" — just goes around and around and is difficult to stop playing.
