Default Comping for a Singer

Question: I am going to comp for a singer (Girl From Impanema, duet between her and my guitar (er, is that called a duet?). Is it recommended that I stick to "Rhythm" chords so I can stay out of her way, musically? The rhythm that I learned pretty much utilizes chords that have 5th and 6th string roots, so it is a lower in register. Is that how you would do it? Thanks.

Yes ,
sort out her key in advance
run through it with her too if poss
I've played with singers who say they want some song in G or whatever
you play a nice intro quoting the first bit of the song
and they come in C or something ..... happens

Ipanima is a nice song , it will be cool
don't freak out too much on the B section !

Yes, Joe Pass & Ella Fitzgerald is the best reference You can get In Bossa Novas i try to keep the comping not to fancy with steady bass note rhytm (roots & fifths alternating). When signer is no too fancy either (kinda flat) - this reveal beauty of this genre IMHO
