Default Looking for specific sight reading material - comping w/ rhythmic "hits"

I have plenty of reading material for single note lines.

I have all the real books for, well, anything you'd ever want to perform or practice based on a standard lead sheet

I would like a lot of material that simply contains (not necessarily exclusive of anything else) the harmony and rhythmic hits for the chords.

This is something I'm weak at.

I'd imagine slightly more modern big band charts would fit this bill, and latin stuff often has a ton of it.

I don't care if it's PDFs or a suggested book I have to buy. In fact, if you are an arranger or composer and have original material you'd like to share just for my practice purposes, that would be awesome!

I found this but I'd imagine it has more than I need and not necessarily a lot of what I do need.

I do not need or want voicings or a method book - just anything where I have to sight read chord changes on specific rhythmic hits.

This is for practice for some auditions coming up.

Since it's for sight reading, it can't just be a tune or two; ideally I'd like at least a few dozen pages of material.

Thanks in advance!

The only two that I have that come to mind are:

Amazon.com: Mel Bay presents MBGU Jazz Curriculum: Payin' Your Dues with the Blues (Mel Bay Guitar University) (9780786674626): Jay Umble: Books

This one has about 45 pages of rhythmic hits with chord changes. The rhythms and voicings are real hip in my opinion. Page 8 & 9 is where these examples start and you can see that on the look inside. Although those pages are fairly vanilla compared to some of the other examples, it builds from those initial examples and some of the examples are a full 12 bars.

The other one:

Amazon.com: Rhythm Guitar Encyclopedia (0038081138992): Fisher, Jody: Books

This has a lot of rhythmic figures but they're mainly repetitive rhythms over two bars. If you look inside that book linked you'll get a good idea what the books about.

JakeAcci: Have you tried Sight Reading 1 & 2 and Melodic Rhythms by W. Leavitt? There's lots of chords to sight-read in the 1 & 2; rhythms up the wazoo in the MR book.

Check out some standard sheet music, which is three stave (grand staff and vocal staff). Most of the real book songs are available in standard sheet music. Hal Leonard and Alfred publishing have a lot of these books.

Fep thanks for the suggestions!

The first one might be good, but I think I might get distracted by the tabbed out voicings. I was hoping for something that had a lot of stuff like this:

Noteflight - Rhythmic hits example

The Fisher book is cool but not really what I'm looking for. I want something that would be like sight reading dense modern compositions either for a big band or small combo.

Broadway show guitar scores would be good (not so easy to come by)

Chuck Sher's The Latin Real Book and the World's Geatest Fakebook both have many but not exclusively ensemble charts.
I believe the European Real Book and The All Jazz Real Book do as well but I don't own those so I'm not as sure. Reg has them all.

Can't you just get your hands on some big band guitar charts? They are notated for the chord rhythms.

Hi Jake,

Here's a link to some big band charts. Unfortunately the rhythm hits on the guitar parts are sparse, but still...it has a little bit of what you're looking for:

PDFjazzmusic.com | Big Band Charts, Big Band Arrangements: Jim Martin

Paul

Thanks everybody for the links and suggestions! I think the Latin Real Book might be just what I need...

Jake... depending on your reading... you should join a Big Band. Most colleges, Jr. etc... have a few. One or two years actual reading in ensemble settings will give your practice somewhere to develop.
