Default You're The Top intro chords

Hi all,

I posted this question (and others) over in the Getting Started forum with little response, so I though I might try here.

So far for the intro, "At words poetic..." etc. (or verse, if you're going back to the Anything Goes versions) I've got this:

(Bb7) l Eb Edim l F-7 Bb7 l Eb F#dim l C7 l
l F-7 l Bb7 l Eb l Bb7 (melody goes b9 to 9 to 5)

l Eb Edim l F-7 Bb7 l Eb F#dim l D7 l
l G- F7 l Eb D7 l Bb7 l Bb7 l

I'm really not sure about the first two bars of the last line "but if this ditty is not so pretty". I've been doing this by ear from Cole Porters own version singing and playing piano.

Any suggestions on a better way to play this?

Thanks in advance.
Ben

Found a YouTube video of it. Try this:

But (G-)if this (Gbo7)ditty is (Bb/F)not so (F7)pretty

At (Bb7)least it'll tell you how great you are

Not bad. Before picking F7 as the second chord of that first bar, I was playing the Gbdim chord (although notating it at F#dim), same as my F7, except, of course the root is raised a half step and the chord name/sensibility changes.

I think you're right that Bb/F and F7 are what Porter is playing. I just stumbled onto subbing Em7b5 for the first chord of that bar, which sounds nice, but changes the sensibility from major to minor. And although the last chord really does seem to be F7, I really like what D7 does for the intro.

Thanks so much for your help.

Any other thoughts or suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em.

Cheers,
Ben

You're welcome. You've no doubt also looked into these interpretations?

Look at that Gb dim, (F#Dim), as a F7b9 without the root.
