After the
thread in the "theory" section about Goodrick's chord cycles, I open here a new one, as a trial to squeeze something pratical from all that stuff...
The first pratical thing is with the basic cycle2 triads.
As the progression goes "up", the fingerings go "down" the fretboard instead.
This way I can decide to play the entire cycle (the basic major scale harmonization) *in position*, by using a mix of the cycle fingerings and the "traditional" ones to return up the neck...
Code:
---------------------------------------------
--8----6----8----6----8----5----6----5-------
--9----7----9----5----7----5----7----5-------
-10----7----9----7----9----7----9----5-------
---------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------
C Dm Em F G Am B° C
C -> Dm = cycle 2
Dm -> Em = "normal"
Em -> F = "cycle 2
F -> G = "normal"
G -> Am = cycle 2
Am -> B° = "normal"
.. and now I can decide to return up to the initial C triad, or follow the cycle 2 and go to the one 5th fret
Here obviously I could continue harmonizing the scale in the new position, as the voice movement are always the same
In the Cycle 2 the root of any chord goes down 2 steps (diatonic), and the other two voices go down 1 step, and in the "normal" progression all the voices go up 1 step (diatonic) instead...
Nice.
