Default Augmented/Diminished....

I'm new here...

I been playing guitar for a long time but mainly old school blues of the ragtime/picking variety.

So I think I have a reasonably knowledge of harmony. I can tell a dom9th from a min9 ect.
I am pretty sure I understand but don't fully comprehend the real meaning of what a maj and min or dominant chords is. I do know about functioning and non functioning dominants. I just don't have them in my ear yet as how to apply the paterns to the idiom.

The thing is I been working through a Joe Pass Chord book where none of the chords are named but are grouped into Maj,Min,Dom,Aug,Dim and Min7b5.

So I figured I was going to work out what these chords are called. I don't know if my answers are correct but I have been cross referencing with the internet. Thankfully all the chords in the book are in the same Key. SO knowing the root I do expect of myself to be able find the chord on my own.

However that is not the case. There are a few areas I am unsure. Firstly and most confusingly for me. Can you call any sharp 5 chord augmented ? What is the difference between an Aug7 or a Dom7#5 ?

What about Aug7#9 against a 7#5#9 ?

Do they function differently in sound ? I don't read music and have not read through enough chord passages of standards to know if real books just use an either or situation. Augmented can be dominant but are there situations where it is not and it is being used as a leading note when the chord specified was not typically dominant ?

I am probably confusing myself but it is just niggling a way at my brain.

Bonus Q. (sorry)

I get G dom7#5#11 for this chord. F - B - D# - G - Db .

Just doesn't sound right to me.

Hey
7#5 and Aug7 are just two different symbols for the same chord, G B D# F, same thing for Maj7#5 and AugMaj7, G B D# F#, jazz hasn't really standardized their chord symbols yet, so you'll find different books, teachers, players, etc all use slightly different chord symbols to say the same thing. Hope that helps clear that up!

And the G7(#5, b5) chord you posted is just one voicing for that chord, I like to play that voicing but add in the 13th instead of the sharp 5, so

F B E A C#

9
10
9
9
8
x

kind of a Jim Hall, Gene Bertoncini chord, very cool sound, but only has the one alteration, the #11
