Default Play Along Book for Comping

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of any play along books that are good for comping practice? Something with drums, bass and a horn playing the melody and an improvised solo? If anyone knows of any that would be great.

thank you

There's an Aebersold book/CD like that. It's #40 something. You can Google it. It's called Rhythm Section Workout. There's also one called Play Along With Jimmy Raney where you can switch off the solo part and practice single-line improvisation or switch off the comping and play along with the solo.

I use Aebersolds to practice comping. Almost all of them have bass and drums on one stereo track and keyboard on the other. Slide the balance all the way over to the bass/drum track and you can be the comping instrument.

That's what I forgot to mention at the outset. You can use any of them basically because of the stereo channel separation.

I received this book the other day after hearing about it in this thread, and it's actually pretty good (I don't usually care for Aebersold material). The songs are all originals, and cover a bunch of genres...bop, swing, bossa, modal, ballad, waltz, fusion. And the songs are all pretty professionally composed. In fact, a couple of the Jack Petersen tunes I'm considering moving into my repertoire.

There is a section that presents a bunch of chord diagrams for the voicings used in the recordings. These are pretty hip 3- and 4-note voicings, some of which I already use, and some of which are new to me.

One note: there are two versions, one for guitarists/keyboardists (Vol 30A), and the other for drummers/bassists (Vol 30B). Make sure you get the right one!

Yeah, I liked some of the common-sense three-note voicings in that one so much that it connected up with something I have been trying to do lately bit can't seem to wrap my head around yet with larger voicings. That is, as Bert Ligon says, to "stop thinking of chords" and think about the actual notes, voice-leading, etc..

Hi All

Most of the Aebersold books & CD have Drums + Bass + Comping but there is no melody without which it is difficult comp - there is no direction for comping except for written chords & melody.

Are there any books with Melody + Drumm + Bass without comp so that we can play chords against these?

regards
Calyjazz

Maybe the Hal Leonard PlayAlongs...
I remember they have two tracks for one tune.
One tracks with melody and a second without.
I don't remember if you can shutdown the piano without the melody.
But you don't have direction for comping.

In the aebersold vol.54 special guitar comping (or voicings), you have direction but not the melody.

If it's for practice, another solution, it's to use midi files. Personaly, I use the "Guitar Pro" software sometimes, you can mute the instruments you want.

Yes, you do have the melody and improvisations. You have to get the right version FOR guitar and piano. Volume 54A, I think it is, allows you to replace the guitar comping and play along during improvisations. The other books are called Play along with Jimmy Raney Vol 20 and this allows you to comp while Jimmy Raney plays the solos written out in the book or you can switch channels and improvise, etc.. There is also duets with Jimmy Raney.
