I assume that means a transcription in musical notation as opposed to tab: "dots." I jammed with a young guy in New Orleans who referred to music notation as "dots."

i see. an attempt to sound hip.

if one is so hip, maybe one don't need no stinking dots. brutha can jus transcribe it hiself. or play it back after hearing it. that would be hip.

I've had two friends, when asked about or shown notation, remark that it was just meaningless dots on paper to them. Neither one showed any interest in learning, either, even after I told them it was a piece they wanted to learn. I think they were hoping I would either tab it out or show them how to play it.

aw, c'mon, give the kid a break, you never used "hipster" language? Never called someone "cat"??

Yes, curious that Farlow transcripts seem quite rare, perhaps because some of his solos were so unplayable, not even he could play them!

There's nothing hip about calling written music 'dots,' it's common musicians' slang, at least in the UK, including among the sort of musician that would be appalled to be considered hip. It's only a joke that everyone has forgotten was once funny, and I don't see what's wrong with asking if anyone has a transcription of a solo, either.

That was my sense. I don't know how common it is here---I don't get around much anymore--but I was never in doubt about what it meant. And further, someone *asking* for the dots is obviously capable of reading them (-for otherwise they'd be no use.)

"dots" never thought about it being hip just a term that a lot of people i know use. anyhow, no one has anything? not too keen to transcribe it if it is available somewhere. if i do i'll pop it up here.

never heard it called that in jazz circles/slang before. but then i have limited pro jazz exposure, and more traditional/professional/academic training.

guess i'm the one who ain't so hip then.

Those dang hillbillies up in the mountains refer to music notation as "fly specks and hen scratches".
