Take a chord like a Ma7, a diminished chord, and the major scale for the Ma7 chord. Play the Ma7 with the root on top string. Now move next note of the major scale and play a diminished chord with that note on top. Move to next note in the scale which should be the Ma7 with it's 3rd on top. See the pattern, when a chord tone on top play the chord or the appropriate inversion. For non-chord tones play a diminished chord. Then make up a simple line/lick and use that process to turn it into a chord riff.
