| | Playing through Jazz Tunes in a Jazz Style OK... This is my personal opinion. There's so much Bull Shit on this Forum, it's getting hard to take...I was thinking of posting videos of playing through Jazz Tunes, as played by a jazz player, that's what I am. No rehearsing, just sight reading through and explaining as I go through tunes. I can read just about anything... so I can either just start or take request. I was thinking of more concentration on comping, when I listen to most guitar players it appears to be somewhat of a weakness of many, in general. I can't start until Thur., I have to finish a R&B show and a couple of big band charts for gig in a couple of weeks. But I'll take some request... please don't pick tunes you just want to hear, pick tunes you want and can play...
I was thinking of starting a different thread to teach how to compose tunes, the nuts and bolts, not the inspirational part. I'll figure out how and where to start thread... Best Reg |

| | One reason I picked that---aside from it's being a 'must-know' tune---is that it has a few places where one chord lasts a couple measures. That's something I struggle with when comping. What to do? Sometimes I make it so busy, I lose my place!

| | Reg,
Would love tutorials on soloing through "Darn That Dream" and "Lush Life". I also want to say "Giant Steps" but as much as I love it, it's not really a tune in the traditional sense.
Your post has some irony; when I was jogging today I thought of some of the stuff I read on here and then thought "I wonder what guys like Reg think of it." I can hear that no bull shit style in your playing; it's great. You "put up" and you "shut up"; the knowledge comes through without any palaver. My Dad was a bassist and teacher and I think if he were alive to see this board he'd say, "That cat can play, listen to him."
So I will. Your input is much appreciated.

| | Sounds good to me--even if it's just an excuse for me to listen to you play more
I'm in the process of getting set up at home for video as well. I think it'd be cool to have several folks doing this...I'm not sure if I'll be as good an "on camera" teacher as Reg, but I think just hearing someone explain what they're thinking as they go through a tune--and then perhaps having a few different viewpoints--could be really beneficial. |

| | I'd appreciate any insight you might have on "Invitation." I'm playing it as part of my junior recital next month, and I'm having a hard time playing through those changes...the hardest parts for me being the exit from the bridge (|Em7b5 | A7b9 | D7#9 | G7#9) and the last 4 bars of the song (F7alt | Bb7#9 | EbminMaj7 | D7#9 - G7#9).
Thanks,
Jeff |

| | well, just upon looking at those changes--that first bit isn't too bad--a ii V in D minor, and I love the good old blues scale over a 7#9--and then to a G7 altered idea...
I'll look back at that second part in a little bit. |

| | Oh this great! I'd really like to hear you do a full on Misty. No bullshit, only the real deal. It would be so great to hear a real pro handle it special, just for us here on the forum.
Maybe play it through complete, then break it down and explain all/some of your decisions. It's my favorite song of all time, I very hope you'll consider it. |

This is amazing and generous. "Body and Soul," "A Foggy Day," and "What's New" would be my requests. Thanks so much! You are a true gentleman. |

| | Good evening, all...
"Play Misty for me...". Hummm... Sounds familiar.
I've been 'working' on this tune for a few years now (but, as you know, I'm slow...). I agree; for me it's tops. Yes, Reg, please, play Misty for me (and for BH, I don't mind sharing...).

| | Wow... way cool... this should be fun, I can't really start until after my Thur. gig or Fri. A.M., I'm writing and arranging charts... Mr. B. that would be very cool, I totally dig your playing... I have a list going and I'll probable throw in some contemporary tunes that push a little...Thanks Reg |

| | Right on Reg, thanks for being so generous with your help. I've been working on Giant Steps forever. Can't seem to memorize the progression so I get lost on the solo, lol. I know they're all II-V-I's, but I have a difficult time remember where the next II-V-I is. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

| | Hey... I'm started, I did three quick Videos... there quick takes but I think there pretty easy to see what and how I comp... I did them In alphabetical order... sort of. The first one is A Foggy Day... Check it out and if any think sounds like something you like, let me know and I get into more detail version or short section... These are just for reference to see how I approach comping, what voicings, and how I rhythmically fill... I'll record a few more before my gig tonight... Thanks Reg |

I appreciate you taking the time to do it and to post. For a tune you "never play" it sounds great, probably better than some who play it all the time.
Here's what's so important, at least to me; I always know what tune it is throughout that whole comp and that would be the case even if I had never asked to hear it and you didn't announce what tune it was. I could hit play and within two bars say to myself "Oh yeah, Darn That Dream". You really outline the melody without getting in the way of it. Right in the pocket.
Thanks again; you've given me some great ideas, especially higher up on the neck for color.
