| | great stuff again. my favorite thread since joining. inspiring.
yeah, don't forget about Georgia. Been working on that, but I'd really like to focus on it some more. I've seen lots of versions online in different keys but I've been playing it in F. you know: F, E-7b5, A7, D-7, D-7/C, G/B, Bb-7, etc. In particular, the D-7/C sounds right but doesn't feel exactly right when I try to comp.
I can follow a lot of your chords, but a bit slower would be a big help, plus naming some of the altered ones. I can construct most chords (I think) if I see the fret position and the name. And I've absorbed/internalized a lot of voicings in the last month or so.
edit (a few days later): I've got a lot of this tune worked out now, still, I'd be more than curious to see what you play, especially soloing over these changes. I've been trying to work out arpeggios and guide tones, but it's far from musical at this point.

I guess I'll start to breakdown short sections and show how chords have many functions and methods of analysis. There's usually more going on besides the obvious. Anyway check out tune and please ask questions... Reg | Hey Reg. I would love to pick your brain. I loved this video and grabbed some ideas from it. But i have no idea what tune you were doing. Your approach is cool. But i would love to see the chords you are looking at in the first place, then to see your break downs a little slower. LOL At times i could hardly hear what you were saying, others it popped right out. I liked the subs you were playing instead of Dim. I get how you were putting ornamental notes in some chords based on the scale you were using. I also like when you threw those tritone baselines in. |

| | I think the one on top is the chord named in the original chart and the bottom one is what is shown gersdal's chord grid (what reg subbed for that chord). |

| | Reg's proposal on comping Invitation was rather intricate (for me at least ), and the notation had to be made quite differently. So I wrote it all down in GuitarPro. The rhythmic notation is probably wrong at times, but I think I got the gist of the voicings and stuff that Reg did. I only notated the commented version, not the part when he plays through the tune without comment. That's slightly different. He also go back to explain things at times, and plays it differently , which makes it hard to know what to transcribe.
If you have any comments or corrections to these - please let me know. I'll be happy to correct any mistakes. |

Thanks Reg | Thanks Reg for your kind words. I'll try to find time to transcribe more of your contributions. I find them all to be fantastic examples and just on the spot for me where I am in the learning curve. Thanks again, Reg.
I'd love to see a more complete coming explanation of the Alone together, but I'll see what I can do on the matter based on the video you posted.
And off course, if you can play the transcribed version of Invitation to see if I made any major errors ... |

| | Hello everyone (and of course Reg!).
Great forum and great tread... I am slowly understanding what is going on LOL... I've only been playing for 3 years (hobby)... I usually play my guitar alone along with my BIAB (Band-in-a-Box). Most of these standards I have them on BIAB and they are in their original Chords... I've just learned most of the Jazz Chords and now I am finding it intriguing with all the possible substitutions... (btw, I am loving Diminshed and b9 chords even though Reg you keep saying you dont like them LOL, as to me they are still a novelty...)
The other thing is, wow, the multitude and speed of these chord changes... it's something I will have to get used to slowly but surely as i can see how it makes things a lot more "professional" sounding....
Lastly, it just amazes me the talent of those who can enlessly improvise SOLOs making them look sooo easy... it will probably take me decades until I start doing some of that... (I'm only 52 ;-D) but I would love to be able to do that one day...
Dick
P.S. Reg, what is the guitar you are playing in these videos? It's a beauty! I use a Peerless Conti and a Gibson ES-339 (and sometimes a Les Paul Traditional Plus). I find the thin bodies easier to hold so far..... |

| | Hey Dick... don't mind me... I say lots of things just to push buttons. I'm pretty old school... it's just that I gig all the time, so I see and hear many young players. Most don't enjoy being told much, so I try different methods.
My main working guitar is a 94 Guild Artist Award, with the Bartolini pick up made for the Artist. I added a tone control. This is my second one... I wore the other one out...really. As with most musicians I have too many instruments etc... which sit around most of the time. I do agree about the thinner bodies and many other playing aspects with non jazz boxes, but find guitars influence how we play, and I personally like how jazz boxes make me play.... I don't really think it's that big of a deal. Best of luck with everything... Reg |

| | Hi Reg,
I know the wish list from your followers is still quite long, still I want to put in my request for Billy Eckstine's I Want To Talk About You. Last Saturday I saw John Scofield perform this tune with his band at the North Sea Festival: pure magic.
Thanks for the valuable vids and have fun, Joris |

Thanks for the valuable vids and have fun, Joris | Hi Jorisfun, That song is one of my favorite ballads and my wife ( our vocalist) sings it often. I don't mean to hijack this thread but I felt like saying something because few people know this tune. I hope Reg will have time to do this one for you.

| | No worries Wiz,
Hijack all you want, but your idea on the popularity is spot-on: absent in all Realbooks. Can't imagine why... The changes are pretty simple though, that is why I'd like to see how Reg will spice this tune up.

| | Wow I love this forum, what a great place for jazz guitarists of all levels.
Reg great stuff man I've already gleaned a lot from your videos in this thread. You have a ton of fans here including myself. Seeing the stuff broken down and explained within the context of a tune is definitely the best way to do it. Great stuff man. Kudos |

Kudos | I agree, it is just great material - I think it is what a lot of us need really. You know when you are watching/listening to a great player, and they do something cool, and you want to know what it was, but it's already gone and you can't get it? Well with Reg's videos you can get it - brilliant! Real jazz (as opposed to some uninspiring contrived "educational" stuff you come across), played right in front of you, and discussed by the player, that you can watch over and over until you have what you need, I love it. |

| | Reg, your voicings sound great, make sense, & are playable, being a beginner, this is just what I need. The tunes are hip. Especially liked "Laura," I always loved that tune. I want to talk about you, would be very cool. Peace, Ray |

I was thinking of more concentration on comping, when I listen to most guitar players it appears to be somewhat of a weakness of many, in general. I can't start until Thur., I have to finish a R&B show and a couple of big band charts for gig in a couple of weeks. But I'll take some request... please don't pick tunes you just want to hear, pick tunes you want and can play...
I was thinking of starting a different thread to teach how to compose tunes, the nuts and bolts, not the inspirational part. I'll figure out how and where to start thread... Best Reg | I am SO early in my learning that I am still very much in the Shut Up and Listen stage so as not to add to the BS. haha.
Great playing and I sincerly hope that I can get to your level in time. If I don't get there, well, then I will just enjoy the ride.
