Default Chord Solos

Why Don't people use chord solos anymore.

While studying giant steps i realised it would sound really good with a chord solo rather than a single line solo.

Why do people tend to single line solo more than chord solo?

they don't?

my guess woud be that most modern guitar players are listening to horns more, but that's nothing new. It was new when Charlie Christian did it!

But there's still plenty of players who can play chord solos. Hell, I'm nobody famous, and it's my bread and butter!

It is not uncommon for someone to throw in a chorus of chords as part of a solo.

I can't think of any videos, but jonathan kriesberg comes to mind as a cat that can really tear it up with chords.

And he's certainly not new, but still playing--check out the duets with scott hamilton and the great bucky pizzarelli. Go bucky go!

oh! and lionel loueke. Goes chordal in almost every solo at some point.

There's loads of clips of Barney Kessel doing melodies in chords as well as chords in solos. It's a really common thing to do.... loads of the classic Jazz guitarist's did it...

Johnny--

those ar HUGE questions. Way bigger than I can cover in one internet post. But there's tons of good info on this site. I suggest spending some time poking around and searching threads on this board.

But all those chords come from understanding major scale harmony and knowing multiple inversions for each chord you play. Those are the topics to start on.
