Default How to play walking bass lines & chords at the same time

Most of you guys probably already have this concept down, but here's a video I just put up showing how simple it to play walking bass and chords at the same time.

YouTube - Walking Bass with chords - Part 1

Enjoy!

hey, you beat me to it! (i'll be loading my video on the same subject within the next few weeks.)

i liked it—you have a nice low-key approach. the one thing that i didn't like and found very distracting were the 'funny' comments throughout. maybe it was your way to stay humble, but those comments really took away from the lesson. imagine the beginner watching your video—he (or she) will be intently watching your hands and will miss what you're demonstrating every time your little comments flash on the screen.

by the way, when will parts 2 and 3 come out?

I put that vid up last night and already have had 2 comments about the pop ups being distracting. Huh...if the feed back persists, I may remove them, although I may not as I have this "I'll be me, you be you" approach to life. We'll see. Thanks for the feedback - I do appreciate it.

Its a royal pain to set up the lighting and such to make these vids and I have almost ZERO free time in my schedule - so I got the stuff set up last night and I'm going to leave it up till I get the other vids done. I hope to get the other 2 vids out this week - my wife won't stand for me stealing all her lamps for more than a few days. One vid will be walking bass over Fly Me To The Moon in Dm and the other will be walking bass over blues in E.

You might want to disable the balloon comments. Someone went through and did a number on you.

OK, I took 'em out - except for a couple actually related to lesson content.

Thanks for the sounding board guys!

The lesson was good. Sorry, I was distracted by the balloons to say it earlier...

Newbie! Books on walking bassline

Thank you for the video of the walking bassline. Btw, are there any useful books out there dedicated to this, and not just merely a chapter?
Thanks all....... Keith

check out some of the other videos on youtube—kevin van sant (eclypso) and justin sandercoe (from expert village) have really good videos on the subject. (and i'll be putting one out in a couple of weeks.) you'll find more if you search for 'jazz guitar walking bass.' (sorry, i'm not aware of any books that cover walking basslines.)

Yeah, Kevin has had that one up for probably 3-4 years, and it is still one of the best. Kevin is a great guy, and a very good player.

Great lesson and thanks for the tip at the end of the clip re: how to train your muscle memory for awkward switches between chords.

I might recommend picking up a book for bass players instead of one for walking on guitar. Not only will you get a bunch of cool ideas, you'll also get work on reading bass clef... just an idea.
